Patient Care & FAQ

Before Your Patient Visit

Dr. Meyer requests that every patient fill out an initial Intake form prior to your first office visit. This is so that your case may be reviewed and more time may be spent addressing your specific concerns at the time of your visit.  We will send you an electronic copy of our intake forms when you schedule your first appointment.  Additionally, any recent laboratory work or diagnostic reports that you may be able to bring to the visit are very helpful.

What to Expect on Your First Visit The first office visit generally consists of taking a comprehensive medical history and physical exam. The visit generally lasts 60- 90 minutes. Please be sure to leave enough time in your schedule for us to complete this process.

We are in-network with the following insurance companies:

  • BCBS of Vermont
  • Cigna
  • MVP
  • Green Mountain Care/Vermont Medicaid
  • *Please note that some Green Mountain Care plans require a referral from your primary care provider.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What is your specialty?

A: We specialize in helping patients with chronic illness.  While we are happy to help in many different capacities with health restoration, we specialize in supporting people with the following concerns:

  • Digestive disorders
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Overweight/obesity
  • Cardiovascular risk reduction

Q: Do you accept insurance?

A: Yes, we are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont, Cigna, MVP, and Green Mountain Care.

Q: Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor for patient services at your office?

A: In most cases, a referral is not required. Some plans through Green Mountain Care do require a referral through your primary care provider.  It’s always a good idea to call ahead to your insurance company to assess whether a referral is required.

Q: Do you accept out-of-network plans?

A: We will do a courtesy insurance billing on your behalf for out-of-network plans.  In all out-of-network plans, however, payment for the visit is required on the date of service.

Q: Are any of the nutritional supplements that you recommend covered under my health insurance?

A: Nutritional supplements are rarely covered by insurance plans as medicine.  Some cafeteria plans and HSA plans may be used to cover the costs of the nutritional supplements in some cases.

Q: Will all of my lab tests and diagnostic procedures be covered by my health insurance?

A: Not always.  Coverage for labs and diagnostic procedures varies widely with your health insurance plan.  We always alert you when we know that a recommended test is out-of-network and/or may require out-of-pocket expense for you.

Q: I have never been to a naturopath before.  What can I expect during my first visit?

A:  Our first visit generally lasts between 60-90 minutes, depending on the complexity of your concerns.  We spend time discussing any immediate health concerns, family and personal medical history, as well as discussing lifestyle factors and your personal challenges and health goals in depth.  We also do a targeted physical exam to get a baseline evaluation of your health status at the start of our work together.

Q: What types of modalities do you use to treat chronic health concerns?

A: We always address diet and nutrition, physical activity, and stress reduction as part of our care plans.  In addition, a number of options may be recommended including nutritional supplements, botanical medicines, and sometimes prescription medications when they are the best option.

Q: Do you prescribe medications to patients?

A: Most prescription medications should be managed by your primary care or other specialty providers.  While we do occasionally recommend pharmaceuticals, our key focus is on offering Lifestyle Medicine support.

Q: Will you take me off of all my medications?

A: No.  Medication management is typically done through your prescribing doctors.  We are always mindful about carefully complementing your current treatment plans and helping to restore your health with naturopathic modalities.

Q: Can you be my primary care provider?

A: No. We are currently not providing primary patient care at Well-Natured.  We recommend that you maintain an active relationship with a local PCP for medication management and any acute care needs.
